Wood vs. Metal Sheds in Kentucky Weather

Humidity, hail, temperature swings and how each material holds up over a decade.

Kentucky's actual conditions

The Ohio Valley delivers high summer humidity, freeze-thaw cycling, occasional hail and periodic straight-line wind. Any material judgment has to start there.

Wood-framed buildings

Stronger for hanging shelves and cabinets, easier to modify, better looking on residential lots, and simple to repair board by board. They require a dry base and periodic paint or stain.

Metal-clad post-frame

Faster to erect, excellent large-span economics, no repainting for many years, and unfazed by moisture. Louder in rain, harder to insulate well, and dents from hail are cosmetic but permanent.

Hybrid is common

Most of our farm buildings are wood-framed with metal roofing and siding, which captures the structural flexibility of lumber and the durability of steel skin.

What decides it

Residential lot next to the house: wood siding to match. Working farm building over 24 feet wide: post-frame with metal. Everything in between depends on budget and appearance priorities.
